All dry stack retaining walls are gravity walls and thus called “living” walls. The Pyramids, the great wall of China, the Inca Temples and many more ancient structures are examples of such building techniques.

A dry stack interlocking retaining block system is by far the best way to provide a strong, cost effective and at the same time flexible and durable wall which will last forever. Please note that for walls up to about 1.2m in height (about six rows Greenlock blocks) the services of a qualified civil engineer is not required. If the wall is higher then 1.2m it is compulsory to engage the services of an civil engineer. The GreenLock hollow core blocks are ideal and far better suited then non interlocking retaining wall systems for planting, quick growing, low maintenance and low water use plants to create a sustainable and easy to maintain landscape.

The GreenLock retaining walls have been installed successfully in light, medium and heavy duty applications. Where specified by the engineers, reinforcing grids (Geofabrics), soilcrete or reinforced concrete or a combination of these soil anchorage / stabilising materials have been used. For extreme high walls and difficult soil conditions, multiple rows of GreenLock blocks are used at the bottom rows of the wall to give the wall extra weight and resistance against “over” movement and possible wall failure. In our experience failure of a retaining wall is mainly due if the wall has not been designed by a qualified civil engineer, is badly installed or if inferior designed and manufactured blocks have been used. Although the GreenLock range of retaining wall blocks have been designed to be user friendly and aesthetically pleasing, we at GreenLock think that the best looking retaining wall is the one planted and can not be seen.
